Solar ovens and RV's – A match made in heaven

A solar oven and a RV is a match made in heaven. My wife and I have been all along for about three years and are still learning new lessons on adaptation to this unusual lifestyle. A major adjustment of the environment, which took some time used to, was adapting to a smaller space. Does not move through space, kitchen space, storage space, my space, your space, and probably biggest challenge is the shared space. A woman likes to "space." A place for almost everything and almost everything in place, if there is enough space. After more one of the sales unit in an RV is considered a luxury, if not impossible.

The second challenge is recognized daily management of energy resources, mainly the backup battery at home, food and needs. The generator must be started, even for small tasks such as brushing hair, making toast, making a smoothie or ironing a shirt. It is particularly necessary for the operation of microwave or convection oven, and for periods of one to two hours to cook a roast or turkey. The main challenge related to the use of a furnace in a RV, mobile home, is the waste heat generated in such a small space and may become intolerable a hot summer day, even with the use of a ceiling fan. Unless the RV is plugged into the port, most of the generators on board will not support electricity demand of a furnace and air conditioning.

Many cooks give up baking bread, cake, pie, brownies, biscuits or corn bread in the summer that reason alone, and yet who would not want fresh baked in hot weather? Well, now you can, thanks to the sun's energy and invention solar oven. A solar furnace is obviously used outside, thus eliminating the condition overheated motor home.

In our research we realized that, like any machine, there are good and some not so good. Our online search solar ovens soon led us to a startling conclusion: this is not a well-organized industry, as alternative energy resources in general. Our first clue was that of dozens of web sites and articles that claim to have plans free how to make the solar oven used CD or pizza boxes and aluminum foil, and even a TV unit made from a discarded satellite dish. However, we did find several brands of solar cookers available, with a wide range of physical and technological designs. One fact quickly noted: there are statements exaggerated performance as many as there are solar oven designs. The most common error was the maximum temperature of the furnace can achieve and maintain a degree of consistency.

The ovens that caught my attention were those that seemed to bend and slip into a backpack or small space in our already over-packed trailer. For Unfortunately, the very feature that has caught my interest first became the very feature that, when the truth be known, became the ultimatum. The folding design prevented the capacity of the furnace to achieve higher temperatures than the heavier, more substantial furnaces designed could.

The box-type furnaces with reflectors shown in tests of cooking time after time the most efficient and consistent performers. Three of the mark superior solar ovens were tested on CBS 'The Early Show "and" box type "sun ovens were the only ones who achieve and maintain 350F. One of the Box-style brands, claimed easily reach 350F, however, the blog's website Gaiam, a client of Utah and one of New Mexico complained that he could not even boil water on a sunny day, with customers in New Mexico, stating that he was twenty days to the summer solstice. Worth doing your research. I scratched one of my prospects.

Another important fact about folding reflector ovens type is that they still require a container for the food it needs be carried along with the reflector separately and can be easily blown by the wind. The box type solar cookers are isolated and most have lids to retain heat. Besides that, foldable solar ovens only have a duration of four months with continuous use. So regardless of the fact that cost less than box-type solar cookers, which need to be replaced three to four times a year, while the box-type furnaces have extended warranties, even with continuous daily use.

Despite the size of box type solar cookers, 19×19x11 "(21 pounds), two of them were again filled with (a climber) to the base camp of Mt. Everest 17,600 feet and were able to cook at temperatures below zero. With this, I narrowed my search to Sun box type furnaces.

However, my problems just start! Remember the "My Space", "Your Space" scenario? Well, I like "My" solar oven so I want to be able to cook two loaves of bread in an oven, while a chicken in another and a shoemaker in a THIRD! Three ovens! Where will I save? What I can do to get rid of space? My precious things, or garbage? Space is precious, right? I solved the problem and simply remove the passenger seat and three kilns are stacked into place with a seatbelt. Problem solved, right? Mal, now said to be driving!

Solar is not all that paint, but at least I'm greener than I was before this all started. Solar ovens are fun in the sun.
