I want to buy a new digital camera?
Which camera Olympus, Cannon, Sony or Samsung should I buy for home use? All have almost same specifications of 8 MP, 3 to4 x optical zoom except that Sony has Carl Zeis’s lens and costs almost 1.5 times more.
I would be viewing most of the pictures using my 17 inch monitor so will it make a real difference between a 8MP camera and a 10 or 12 MP camera coz it costs 6 to 8 thousand rupees more.
Apart from MPs and zoom what should I look for?
If all you are doing is viewing pictures on a 17″ screen then there is no point worrying about MP is a total waste of time. Most 17″ screens run a MAXIMUM resolution of 1280 x 1024 pixels. This adds up to only a tiny 1.3MP!
If you ever want to print a photo, then it’s a different matter although even then there is no need to get caught up in the MP hype.
Optical zoom is the most useful feature as you can’t always get as close to the subject as you would like. The Sony has the Carl Zeis lens yes, but it also uses it’s own memory card format which is more expensive than memory cards for other types of camera. Olympus and Fuji also sometimes use XD cards which are more expensive than the cheaper Sd format memory card.
The biggest key to camera quality it sensor size. They make them so tiny now to save money that the quality suffers. It’s sometimes not easy to find out the sensor size of any given camera, but if you can, compare the sensor sizes and buy the one with biggest sensor. (physical size not megapixels)
Bigger sensors then need bigger lenses which give better optical quality as well, so this is a bigger advantage.
Apart from these few points, there is not much difference, just buy the one that you like the best.
