Olympus vs. Canon Powershot A-series: better camera?
so lately olympus has all these new camera’s out with all these awesome features for lower prices (a lot lower than canon’s, sony’s or nikon’s… at my nearest camera store anyways)
we’re talking full guarantee, lithium batteries, image stabilization etc.
i was a little biased towards canon today and decided to buy canon powershot A570 IS instead of the equally good if not surpassable in features, olympus stylus 750.
did i make the right choice?
I think you did the right choice. I can see how the Olympus might have seem more featured: smaller, lighter, more optical zoom, slightly closer macro range, an apparently more powerful flash, slightly faster lens at telephoto, faster burst shooting, higher resolution LCD screen, comes in several colors… heck, even its price (in the stores I looked it up) suggest it must be better, right?
Actually, no. There are some subtle (and not so subtle) advantages to the Canon: noticeably faster lens (that is, it can use wider apertures, thus gathering more light) at wide angle, longer maximum exposure time, priority and manual exposure modes, manual focus, optical viewfinder (useful for several reasons), quite longer battery duration (and uses either rechargeable batteries or alkalines), faster frame rate in movie mode (and it can use its stabilizer, which the Olympus doesn’t), its apparently slower burst shooting mode is actually better because it does 1.7 fps _at full resolution_ (the Olympus achieves its 3.5 fps only at 3 Mpx. reduced resolution, and at full resolution barely scratches 1 fps), it uses the much more convenient (and cheaper, and in larger maximum capacities) SD/SDHC memory card type…
And that’s just on paper. When you actually use it, quality seems roughly equal at first, but then you start looking closely and the Olympus has almost unbelievable corner softness and chromatic aberrations, and at higher ISOs it loses much more sharpness than the Canon.
So, yes, you chose correctly.
