Canon Powershot S5 IS Vs Pentax K100D Super?
Which one should I get? I know it’s SLR-like Vs SLR but it’s also Canon (!) against Pentax… I really need an opinion because I cannot decide and I’m vvery very confused! My profile would be “demanding amateur” and I don’t know which one to buy. I like macro/closeup as well as landscape photography. Pleeeeease! I need to get down to a decision!!!

I agree with every word electrosmack1 wrote, including the idea of adding the Nikon D40 into your selection set.
The only thing attractive about the S5-IS – which I DO recommend to a certain class of photographer – is the range in the zoom lens. It is not the stellar “Canon glass” one answerer referred to. Besides that, it is in front of the puny little 1/2.5″ sensor and there is simply no way that this will ever compare to the sensor in any DSLR.
The K100D Super has reviewed very well. Pentax is a fine company and they are finally coming into their own in the digital market. Their lenses are excellent. I predict that within another year or two, we will be speaking of the big three – Nikon, Canon and Pentax – instead of only two. It used to be that way in film cameras and it will be that way in digital cameras soon enough.
I disagree with the blanket statement that kit lenses are “by definition” not very good. This was true 4 or 5 years ago, but I guess the manufacturers got tired of hearing this same old song and they improved their kit lenses. Both Nikon and Canon introduced their series-II (Roman numeral “2″) and these lenses are quite good. Obviously, they are not pro-level lenses, but they are not something soon relegated to use as a paperweight as they used to be. There are only two user reviews of the Pentax lens at B&H, but both give it five stars. They mention slight vignetting at 17 mm, which goes away by 20 mm. This is no big deal. One user says, “Excellent build quality includes metal
camera mount and great price. Certainly one of the better kit
lenses available.” I’m impressed by the metal mount in a hundred dollar lens!
The Nikon D40 is actually a little cheaper than the Pentax K100D Super, but the Pentax does have on-board image stabilization. As far as sensor size, here is an “A is to B and B is to C” sereies that you can use to see how much better an SLR sensor is than a point and shoot sensor. If you are going to do any cropping or enlarging (“demanding”) you will get my point.
Get the K100D Super or the D40. You will not be happy as a demanding amateur with the S5-IS.
