Canvas Background

i am painting figures on canvas with oil paint do you paint the background colour first?
and then paint over the top of that i have just started out i have just painted figures on to a canvas and find it difficult to now paint in the background colour this may be the way it is done it could be me who needs to patient and go slower .
Many things to think about when oil painting.
Thins first then work towards thicker paint.
Darks first then work towards lighter colours.
Large areas first then work towards smaller areas then finally detail last.
All this while trying to keep a balance of colour, contrast, harmony, and a good composition. Then do this 100 times, throw them all away and start over. Now you are a painter. Nobody said it was going to be easy.
