Eklavya is an organization nonprofit, nongovernmental organization that develops and field tests innovative educational programs and trains resource people to implement these programs. It operates through a network of resources to the schools located in Madhya Pradesh, India For more than two decades, Eklavya has sought to relate the content and pedagogy of education – formal and informal – for social change and development of the student.
Develops methodologies for learner-centered education to promote the problem-solving skills in children and encourage them to ask questions about their natural and social environment. This approach helps children to be lifelong self-taught. Eklavya looks at innovation in an integrated manner, which means that reforms in classroom practices are accompanied by reforms in examination systems, training teaching methods and how schools are managed. It also means that extend learning spaces beyond the school community. Eklavya has built a broad base of resource materials including educational literature, children's literature, magazines, textbooks and other learning aids.
The beginnings In the early years of the decade of 1980, a group of educators and social activists met to discuss the possibility of creating an institute for educational research and innovative action in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. This group had a long association with a pioneering project in science education began in 1972 and was then running in about 225 secondary schools in Hoshangabad district of Madhya Pradesh. Known as the Program Hoshangabad Science Teaching (HSTP), this project was a collaboration between two organizations, Friends of the Country Centre (FRC) and Kishore Bharati (KB) and the Government's education department of Madhya Pradesh. HSTP began as a pilot project in 16 secondary schools of two blocks of the area in 1972 and was expanded after the initial tests to cover all schools in the district in 1978. The next step in the scale of the project further.
The younger group wanted the new institute to take this task as its immediate objective. However, it provides a broad mandate to create a partnership with the Madhya Pradesh government to improve education. Under this mandate, the Institute will focus on innovative experiences in other subjects in school curriculum from primary to higher secondary stage, to understand lessons of these projects in the curriculum and textbooks and look for ways to expand these projects to cover all schools in the state. The focus thus extend beyond the purely academic to include support systems – training packages for teachers, extra-curricular packages, administrative reforms, etc. – Required for these work packages curricular realities in schools. In summary, the institute will develop application systems for macro-level educational experiments micro level and act as a catalyst in the state, district, block and school to make the education system more receptive to innovations. However, while working with the government, would remain independent in their operation. More importantly, during the statewide operation would not be an urban-based institute, but operate through a network of field centers located in small towns and State casbahs.
